Kevin Short, distinguished operatic bass-baritone and pedagogue, will present a solo recital to support UMBC’s David W. Smith Memorial Fund, benefiting vocal arts students at UMBC. Please join us for this unforgettable evening of song and celebration.

Versatile American bass-baritone Kevin Short is thrilling audiences around the globe in a wide range of repertoire ranging from the depths of Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail and Monteverdi’s L’Coronazione di Poppea to Verdi’s Attila, Carmen’s Escamillo and Wagner’s Der Fliegende Holländer.

A sampling of his North America appearances include performances with the Metropolitan Opera, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera, Los Angeles Opera, Washington National Opera, Seattle Opera, Opera Company of Philadelphia, Opera Pacific, Florida Grand Opera, Opera Festival of New Jersey, Sarasota Opera Company, Spoleto Opera Festival, Canadian Opera Company, Vancouver Opera, Edmonton Opera, Santa Fe Opera, and the Opera de las Americas.

David W. Smith, a former member of the UMBC music faculty, was passionate about teaching and touched many lives in his short career. The Gala honors David Smith’s life as an artist and his commitment to the vocal students at UMBC. Ticket proceeds will support the David W. Smith Scholarship for Vocal Arts, which awards an annual scholarship for a young vocalist studying at UMBC.

General admission: $75 (FMV $22)
UMBC alumni: $50 (FMV $22)
All tickets include a post concert reception and may be purchased here.

Online ticket sales will close at midnight on September 27. (After September 27, please contact the Department of Music at 410-455-2942 to reserve tickets.) All tickets purchased after September 21 will be held at will call.


Funds raised will be administered by the UMBC Foundation for the benefit of UMBC Music. Proceeds from the event will benefit the David W. Smith Scholarship for Vocal Arts. Your contribution above the Fair Market Value (FMV) may be tax deductible.
