Grammy Award winning soprano Leona Mitchell is admired as one of America’s most beloved and celebrated sopranos. Ms Mitchell spent 18 seasons as a leading spinto soprano at the Metropolitan Opera in New York where she portrayed many dramatic and lyrical roles in such operas as: Aida, La Forza del Destino, Il Trovatore, Manon Lescaut, La Boheme, Un Ballo in Maschera, Madama Butterfly, Turandot, Dialogues des Carmelites, as well as roles from Mozart and Handel.

David W. Smith, a magnificent tenor and passionate teacher at UMBC, touched so many lives before his untimely passing.  The Gala honors David Smith’s life as an artist and his commitment to the vocal students at UMBC.  Proceeds will support an annual scholarship for a young vocalist pursuing their education at UMBC. We welcome you to celebrate David W. Smith’s legacy on Saturday, September 28 at 5 p.m. in the Earl and Darielle Linehan Concert Hall in the Performing Arts and Humanities Building on UMBC’s campus which is easily accessible from I95 and I695 with ample free parking surrounding the venue. Ms. Mitchell will present an evening of song followed by a reception. Don’t miss this amazing opportunity to see and hear an opera icon, eat fabulous food, and raise money for scholarships.

Not only can you see this amazing concert, you will be invited to attend the Leona Mitchell Masterclass given on Monday, September 30th at 7:00 pm in the same location. You will hear two of our David Smith scholars as well as students from Towson and UMD coached on operatic arias! Don’t miss this performance weekend!

Online ticket sales will close at midnight on September 27. (Some tickets might still be available at the door. We can only accept cash or check at the door.  Please contact the Music Office after September 27 at 410-455-2942.)  All tickets purchased online will be held at will call for pick up the day of the event.

Funds raised will be administered by the UMBC Foundation for the benefit of UMBC Music. Proceeds from the event will benefit the David W. Smith Scholarship for Vocal Arts. Your contribution above the Fair Market Value (FMV) may be tax deductible.
